MEMS inclinometers

Jewell's JMI-100/200 series of MEMS inclinometers are available in Canada from Durham Instruments.

Jewell Instruments has been providing precision force-balanced inclinometers for more than four decades, and its products are available through Durham Instruments. One of Jewell’s latest developments is the JMI-100/200 series of MEMS inclinometers, which are excellent solutions for many manufacturing applications.

These devices from Jewell are available in single- and dual-axis configurations, in the JMI-100 and JMI-200 groups respectively.

A lightweight aluminum enclosure

These MEMS inclinometers have a robust and rugged design for industrial use, but also present the advantage of low-cost Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, also known as MEMS technology. In its most general form, this technology involves miniaturized mechanical and electro-mechanical elements (devices and structures) built using microfabrication techniques. Jewell also offers MEMS parts with its usual attention to detail.

The lightweight aluminum enclosure of the JMI series makes it conducive to many general manufacturing tasks, and the devices can withstand many harsh working environments with their IP65 seal, 100-gram shock resistance, and operating range from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius. These inclinometers are particularly ideal for use in industrial automation and control, construction, agricultural equipment, solar tracking, platform levelling and positioning, mobile radar equipment, mobile cranes, and railway-track alignment and maintenance. Durham Instruments also recommends this series for food processing, forestry, the military, mining, power generation, alternative energy, and transportation.

Other important features of these MEMS inclinometers include the following:

  • Ranges of ±14.5, ±30, and ±90 degrees;
  • Compliance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive, or RoHS;
  • Output of zero to five VDC;
  • Optional temperature sensor available; and
  • Filtering available.

The JMI series of inclinometers has a scale factor tolerance of plus or minus one percent, a scale factor temperature coefficient of 150 PPM per degree Celsius, a bandwidth of five Hertz nom at negative three decibels, a maximum warmup time of half a second, and a storage temperature range from -40 to 95 degrees Celsius. The JMI-100 design weighs only 165 grams, while the JMI-200 weighs 170 grams.
