Matritech: Three decades of machining top custom equipment components

Matritech observed its 30th anniversary this year.

Thirty years. That is how long Matritech Inc. has been in business, keeping customers competitive with custom equipment components. It is tough to keep any company going for that long, but Matritech has earned its staying power by serving as the ultimate one-stop shop for machining services. Today, the company boasts such high-profile past clients as Bombardier and CVTech-IBC – but in 1989, it was just another newly launched enterprise.

Growth, expansion, and constant self-improvement

Matritech’s current status is the result of growth, expansion, and constant self-improvement. That is how the company developed from its humble origins in a 3,200-square-foot facility, focusing on die design and fabrication. Over its first three years, Matritech extended its services in the progressive-die industry, winning notable customers like General Motors and Inglis.

The company eventually expanded its site and purchased a complete press system – a feeder-straightener-decoiler. In 1994, with 19 employees, Matritech relocated to a new facility in Drummondville, Que. There, it broadened its capabilities by acquiring metal-stamping equipment and wire electric discharge machines.

Expansion of space and ability continued over the years. Matritech purchased a CNC punching machine in 1997, enlarged its facility to 32,000 square feet in 1998, bought a laser punching machine in 1999, and introduced robotic welding in 2003. By the turn of the century, Matritech had 70 employees making custom equipment components.

The company continued to invest in the latest machining innovations. This included an automatic press that it purchased in 2006 and a new welding robot with an automatic rotating table, combined with pulsed-arc welding technology, in 2007. With 2009 came the installation of a laser, including an integrated automatic loading system with 36 storage drawers. In 2011, Matritech acquired its third welding robot; then came two CNC bending presses in 2012, a robotic bending cell in 2014, and a horizontal machining centre with two pallet changers in 2015.

As the 2010s come to a close, Matritech operates out of an 85,000-square-foot plant, with more than $15 million in fixed assets. Expansion continues as the company remains Canada’s top choice for custom equipment components.
