A manufacturer of architectural detailing products and ornamental metal assemblies had installed various crane systems from Engineered Lifting Systems & Equipment (ELS) over several years. So, when the company required additional lifting systems in its production facilities, it turned to ELS because of this long-standing relationship, and the superior product and support they have come to expect. The company developed a long-range plan that involved purchasing twin crane systems adjacent to each other to optimize workflow and increase efficiency in its production facility. Planning ahead allowed it to work with ELS to spread the capital investment over several years and have the overall crane design accommodate a two-phase installation.

The project

ELS supplied and installed twin crane systems adjacent to each other in the customer’s manufacturing plant. The crane systems included two top running 10-tonne overhead bridge cranes and multiple three-tonne semi-gantry cranes.

This equipment supports the customer’s workflow methodology, which centres on bringing materials to the workstations for fabrication and assembly processes rather than moving the assemblies along a line of work cells. In the workstations, workers cut, weld, grind, polish and perform assembly tasks. The motorized, overhead semi-gantry cranes deliver materials to each work cell, and remove finished assemblies to a staging area for shipment out of the facility.

The first crane system was designed to share centre columns with the second crane system. Double support columns on the outside of the runway shared foundation and base plates to support both the overhead crane and the semi-gantries’ runway beams. Both 10-tonne bridge cranes have notched beams to position their bridge girders as high as possible to maximize hook height, yet travel below the roof trusses. The semi-gantries’ floor-mounted end-truck features a safety device that stops travel when an obstruction is contacted.

The result

Thanks to the company’s advanced planning, it was able to save money and minimize the crane footprint. And, because it selected Engineered Lifting Systems & Equipment as its supplier, it received high-quality equipment and excellent service.
