A leading manufacturer of aerial devices, digger derricks and specialty equipment for the electric utility, telecommunications and tree care industries required cables for its machinery and equipment — specifically for the boom lift on a truck.

The company required cables that can withstand temperatures of -25 to -40 degrees C, because they would be exposed to frigid outdoor temperatures. But the cables still needed to be flexible for movement and flexing in the boom. The space installation in the boom is tight, so the application also called for a smaller cable with a tighter bend radius.

Lapp cables were the ideal solution. The company’s ÖLFLEX 855 P is installed along the articulating arms of the lift for the control wiring, while the Unitronic Spiral is used on the remote handheld controls in the basket on top of the boom.

ÖLFLEX FD 855 P is designed for extreme mechanical stresses due to tighter bend radius for continuous flexing. The materials used are halogen-free and environmentally friendly, with an expanded temperature range. Insulation and jacketing materials are mechanically and chemically resistant to many environments, and the polyurethane jacket is flame retardant. ÖLFLEX FD 855 CP is a shielded version available with an overall tinned copper braid.

Unitronic Spiral is a shielded, multi-conductor signal and data cable designed to extend four times the retracted length. It is recommended for use with computers, data transmission, office equipment, process control and instrumentation applications. Features include: finely stranded bare copper conductors, PVC insulation, conductors cabled together with non-wicking fillers, dry lubricant, overall copper spiral shield, and a specially formulated black polyurethane jacket.

There are many benefits to using these Lapp cables, which feature TPE insulation and a PUR jacket. The biggest: 855 P will last longer than the prior cable, which will cut down on equipment repair, saving the customer money.
