Manufacturer eases liability concerns with appropriate forklift attachments

A manufacturer of plastic drainage pipe was concerned about liability. The company had been using forklift probe attachments to handle products weighing up to 1,500 pounds. The probes — some built in-house and others acquired from various facilities — were mounted onto diesel-powered forklifts and used to spear products in their outdoor storage yards for moving and stacking operations. But due to the harsh yard conditions, the probes were under severe metal fatigue from bouncing and flexing during load handling. It was common for the attachments to break at the welds or bend under severe loading. The company was concerned about the possibility of a workplace injury, and decided to seek engineered products designed for its applications. 

The manufacturer turned to Engineered Lifting Systems & Equipment (ELS) for its expertise — more than 40 years of it. Several different forklift attachments were sourced from ELS. The basis for the attachments’ designs included structural analysis factoring in deflection of the booms under load. An important feature was the probe-mounting clamp design, which removed the stress concentrations caused by the welding and allowed for easy probe replacement. Other features included reinforced fork pockets and replaceable tie-back chains to forklift carriage.
