Manufacturing often requires attaching two parts or components together securely and reliably. In many cases, how these parts are attached adds to the esthetic appeal of the finished product. The two most common approaches to this are fastening and welding. But there is another approach that deserves consideration — structural adhesives.

Advantages and applications

There are many advantages to using structural adhesives. They offer tough, durable bonds to a wide variety of surfaces, and can improve assembly strength, design flexibility and corrosion protection. As a result, they can also save the user money.

In addition, this approach is very versatile, as it can be used in a wide range of applications, including door bonding, stainless steel sink bonding and tread plate bonding.

Case in point

There are many examples of companies that have benefited from structural adhesives. One leading manufacturer of agriculture equipment was welding several large steel channels to a steel door in order to attach hinges and improve overall stiffness. Welding was strong enough for the application; however, it was causing the door to warp and leaving weld marks that required grinding and polishing before paint processing. Structural bonding was introduced as an alternate method to address these issues. As a result, door warpage was eliminated, as were the extra grinding and polishing steps. Additional benefits like reduced costs and the elimination of rusting were also realized.

Stainless steel sink bonding is another ideal use. In this type of application, spot welding creates marks that have to be grinded and polished off, which adds additional steps to the production process. Using structural adhesives in place of spot welding can result in fewer production steps, a more attractive sink and a strong, long-term bond.

Making the switch

Welding and fastening are reliable bonding methods, but there are certain instances where structural adhesives are the better choice. When looking at your options, consider the materials you are bonding, the environment and the performance requirements. It is also important to perform tests in your application to ensure that your needs are met.

As a leading provider of industrial adhesives, Henkel can help review your processes and provide recommendations. The company can also offer support in testing specific adhesives in your product or application.
