Magswitch E-Series intelligent magnetic grippers reduce end-effector size, lower cycle time, ensure safety, and offer new solutions. Shown here is the CoBot SmartMagGrip E30 for collaborative robotic applications.

Festo Canada has been a distribution partner for Magswitch for two years and carries the manufacturer’s Electric Series, or E-Series, of intelligent magnetic grippers. Revolutionizing ferrous automation applications, these grippers reduce end-effector size, lower cycle time, and ensure safety. They contain proprietary switching technology that enables less energy consumption, quicker actuation, intelligent magnetic gripping, part-correct/part-incorrect feedback ability, and two-to-three times the holding force of any equally sized electromagnet or electropermanent magnet.

Perfect for progressive dies

E-Series grippers are smaller than electromagnets, which lowers the sizes of end-of-arm tools. Designers can frequently use a smaller robot due to the grippers’ smaller size and weight, which reduces capital expenses and footprint. Businesses demand these Magswitch units for stamping applications like progressive dies. Intelligent variable field output can separate a blank from a pile and then identify whether the blank is the correct thickness. The E-Series can identify and grip individual blanks down to 3/5 of a millimetre in thickness.

The grippers offer single-sided gripping technology, which eliminates the need for clamps in resistance spot welding applications. Without clamps, the spot weld gun has easier access to products. The E-Series reduces cycle time, compared to clamps, with fast on/off actuation time of 250 milliseconds. Other applications that benefit from these grippers from Festo: automotive assembly; white-goods manufacturing; heavy industrial manufacturing; electronic assembly; bin picking; measurement; checking; ergonomic lift-assist; and collaborative cells.

The E-Series can also detect the presence of a welded bolt inside an automotive B Pillar and alert if the bolt is missing. This results in a low-cost solution that saves significant rework if the missing bolts are detected early. Customers are using these grippers with non-marring polymer offsets for safe, quick, and effective gripping of A-Class surfaces without blemishes as well. Here, the magnet uses a small level of force to attach to the surface. When the part is gripped and separated from adjacent parts, the user can switch to full power. A clean surface is ensured as ferrous particles fall off the gripper.

The Magswitch E-Series operates on 24 volts DC with serial communication protocols.
