If you are responsible for electrical installation projects in Ontario, adhering to the rules and regulations set out in the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) is the law.

The OESC is developed and updated every three years through consultations with both provincial and national industry experts and safety stakeholders. It is published by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) — an administrative authority acting on behalf of the Government of Ontario with specific responsibilities under the Electricity Act and the Safety and Consumer Statutes Administration Act. Enforcement of the 26th edition of the OESC is set to begin in May 2016.

What does the latest version include?

The new edition has been extensively revised and updated, keeping pace with new technology and building needs. Key changes align with the changes and revisions to the 23rd edition of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, as well as changes specific to the province of Ontario. Some of these important changes include:

  • major changes to sections on renewable energy, hazardous locations and electric heating;
  • expanded requirements for the use of Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCI) in homes;
  • changes to hazardous area classifications and zone requirements; and
  • guidance on what defines clearances between lighting fixtures and nearby combustible material.

How do you access the newest edition?

The OESC is available in PDF format and hard copy. A new digital version for your desktop, mobile device or tablet is coming in early 2016. And for the first time, 2015 OESC bulletins and amendments are included in the purchase price of the code, for the duration of the code cycle. Bulletins will be available from CSA Group through the “CSA Communities” platform as they are released by ESA.
