LAPP has grown and expanded for more than 60 years of providing top connectivity solutions.

Today, LAPP has a worldwide presence that provides connectivity solutions for companies in a variety of industries, from robotics and automation to transportation and the automotive sector. This global network includes LAPP Canada, which distributes wires, cables, connectors, strain relief glands, and accessories from its Mississauga, Ont. facility.

But LAPP’s position did not start out so dominant. The company has grown and expanded dramatically for more than 60 years of providing top connectivity solutions.

The first colour-coded signal cable

The LAPP story began in 1957, when an international upswing in industrialization was causing a large demand for cables and conductors. The late German inventor Oskar Lapp decided to find a way to optimize the current method of manually inserting power and control conductors into an outer jacket, which was a time-consuming practice. His solution was to create the world’s first industrially produced, flexible, colour-coded signal cable, which he christened ÖLFLEX®.

With that, Lapp registered his first patent. He and his wife founded U.I. Lapp KG to produce and sell ÖLFLEX® cables. Two years later, Lapp broke new ground by setting out a definite brand policy and giving his products unique brand names to distinguish them from the competition.

It was not long before Lapp opened a second manufacturing facility. In the 1960s, he founded Lapp Cableswerke GmbH. And in 1976, LAPP North America was established in New Jersey, bringing LAPP innovations to this side of the ocean. LAPP North America would go on to expand its market presence by establishing multiple subsidiaries to address customer needs more effectively, both technically and regionally. LAPP Canada was founded in 1998.

And LAPP has continued to grow and succeed. The company’s North American headquarters now operates out of a 130,000-square-foot facility in Florham Park, NJ, housing a state-of-the-art cable-manufacturing plant, LAPP Cable Works, which opened in 2001. Here, the company designs, develops, and manufactures myriad connectivity solutions, including cable assemblies, complex harnesses, and integrated system solutions for various unique applications.

With about 2,500 employees in 50 global companies worldwide, LAPP continues to offer an unparalleled portfolio of industrial cable products and solutions.
