Occupational health and safety is a top priority at L. & M.

Occupational health and safety is a vital part of operating a business today. It is not enough to create a great product or provide stellar services; every company needs to be a good corporate citizen, by keeping both employees and the environment safe from harm.

As a top Canadian manufacturer of high-quality precision-machined parts with a staff of more than 70, L. & M. Precision Products is aware of its responsibilities. The company is always dedicating itself to complying with all of the proper laws, standards, and regulations regarding workplace safety and environmental protection and keeping up with any changes.

Following the rules

As an employer in the province of Ontario, L. & M. has to stay current with the latest requirements of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). The WSIB not only acts as the province’s workers’ compensation board, but also has a strict compliance framework that supports employers’ efforts to follow workplace safety law while taking disciplinary action on those that are non-compliant.

L. & M. also complies with the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), the national standard for communication about hazardous substances since 1988. Today, Canadian employers follow an updated version of this standard, WHMIS 2015, which the federal government has developed to incorporate the international Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. L&M is in the process of updating its records to the new GHS “Safety Data Sheets” and has provided the training to its employees for WHMIS 2015.

Occupational safety is not just about protecting workers from danger. It also involves keeping the natural environment free of pollutants and toxins. And L. & M. stays transparent about its use of potentially harmful substances in manufacturing. Every year, the company re-evaluates its use of materials and files a “National Pollutant Release Inventory” and a “ChemTrac” annual report for any material element that meets or exceeds the reporting thresholds. L&M filed its Toxic Reduction Act report in 2011 and is prepared to file the next report, which is due in 2019. L. & M. is licenced by the Ministry of Environment’s Hazardous Waste Information Network for its liquid waste that is handled and processed by licenced companies.

L. & M. continues to demonstrate its commitment to safety as much as to quality.
