ECO BRASS is a unique brass alternative that L. & M. Precision Products uses.

As a leading manufacturer of custom precision-machined components, L. & M. Precision Products uses a variety of materials. These include stainless steel, aluminum, copper alloys, titanium, and plastics. Another major material the company uses is ECO BRASS® (C69300): a high-performance, lead-free silicon brass widely in demand by manufacturers that need a brass alternative for applications involving potable water fittings.

One hundred percent recyclable

Today, companies can no longer use leaded brass alloys, due to AB1953 and S3874 restrictions on lead content in potable water fittings – this legislation began in California and has spread across North America. Disinfection treatments and varying water quality damage the corrosion resistance of many lead-free replacement brasses that have been introduced since the ruling. What is needed is an alloy that is 100 percent recyclable and also dynamic enough for use in multiple applications in which top performance and corrosion resistance are a must.

The answer to these challenges: ECO BRASS has an industry-proven performance since the year 2000. This super alloy is about 76 percent copper, 21 percent zinc, 3 percent silicon, and 0.1 percent phosphorous. The silicon strengthens the alloy and protects it from stress corrosion cracking caused by ammonia, amine, and sulfate compounds. The phosphorous prevents the brass matrix from losing its zinc selectively when in contact with many water conditions that can cause dezincification. Together, this makes the alloy ideal for the potable-water industry.

This is why ECO BRASS is the screw-machine industry’s foremost lead-free alloy: because it is machinable, corrosion-resistant, forgeable, and castable. While most alloys excel in one of these areas, this lead-free brass alternative is the only one that can claim all of these strengths. An independent, scientific study by UCLA and Virginia Tech confirms ECO BRASS material to be superior compared to standard leaded alloys in manufacturing components, environmental impact, human health effects, energy consumption, and sustainability.

L. & M. is always improving its processes to keep up with new best practices. This is why it offers ECO BRASS as the ideal alternative for potable water fittings, or as an environmentally friendly, lead-free alternative to traditional leaded brass.
