John Brooks Company is committed to the health and wellness of its employees, and to fostering an environment that encourages healthy living. The Canadian distributor and solutions provider, which specializes in industrial pumps, spraying equipment, filtration products and valves, was recently recognized for this commitment with a GoodLife Fitness Health & Wellness Leadership Award.

A leader in workplace wellness

Nearly seven out of every 10 employees at John Brooks is over the age of 40, and most spend a great deal of time behind a desk. Because of this, the company’s management recognized an opportunity to help employees achieve better balance. Three years ago, the company introduced a corporate wellness program focused on nutrition, physical well being, stress reduction, immunity improvement, financial well being and time management. Based on employee input, the customized program includes daily “get moving” breaks, mini Olympic events, gym and Fitbit subsidy, lunchtime workouts and educational wellness workshops.

“Since implementing a wellness program, we’ve found employees who are consciously making an effort to lead active and healthier lives benefit physically, cognitively and emotionally,” said Heather Collis, the company’s general manager. “Any employee who enjoys coming to work and feels their employer supports them is more likely to develop a stronger sense of self-efficacy, be more engaged in their job and have higher motivation — all which can drastically influence job performance and reduce occupational stress.”

The award

The GoodLife Fitness Health & Wellness Leadership Awards are given to organizations that demonstrate significant efforts to foster cultures of workplace wellness through continuous improvement in fitness, activity, nutrition, education and employee behavioural change. The award recognizes four aspects of workplace wellness programs — leadership, culture and engagement, rewards and recognition, and personal growth — and celebrates organizational initiatives across all sectors and sizes in Canada.

Out of 400 nominations, John Brooks was one of three Canadian organizations honoured with this award at the Goodlife Fitness Health and Leadership Summit in Toronto.

“A proud moment, indeed,” said Collis. “I would like to take this moment to the thank our past, present and 2016 workplace wellness committee for their volunteer time, dedication and commitment to making the wellness program what it is today — an award winning success dedicated to making a difference in the overall wellness of our employees.”
