Features of a standard Vaughan conditioning pump.

One of the great industrial manufacturers with whom John Brooks Company partners is Vaughan Conditioning Pumps. Vaughan produces a unique line of submersible chopper pumps, each of which is mounted on a portable stand and fitted with a high-velocity mixing nozzle. These conditioning pumps operate by recirculating the contents of the wet well by chopping and mixing to create a homogeneous mixture that can be pumped out more easily.

Portable configuration and easy installation

Vaughan submersible chopper pumps are recommended for a variety of conditioning applications, such as lift-station, basin, influent-station/channel, and holding-tank conditioning. They also work well for digester clean-out or homogenization. During operation, floating mats are removed and the pump re-suspends solids that have accumulated on the floor. Because these pumps are mounted on portable stands, they can easily be used for several tasks at one worksite or facility.

A diverse array of material goes into the construction of these conditioning pumps. Each has an impeller, upper cutter, cutter bar, and cutter nut made of cast alloy steel, heat-treated to minimum Rockwell C 60. The casing and bearing housing are made from ductile cast iron, with a cartridge-type mechanical seal containing silicone carbide seal faces and a stainless steel sleeve; the pump also has back-to-back angular contact ball-type thrust bearings and lubrication with ISO Grade 46 hydraulic oil, and each is coated with epoxy paint.

Notable features of these conditioning pumps from John Brooks Company:

  • ability to mix a wet well of up to 12,000 gallons with only 7½ horsepower;
  • portable configuration, complete with stand for easy installation;
  • standard sizes from three to six inches, with motors from five to 40 horsepower and flows from 400 to 1,800 gallons per minute (large models also available);
  • condition tank contents that prevent plugging of standard non-clog pumps and help protect downstream equipment;
  • straight, angled, or double nozzle configurations available; and
  • paint system formulated to withstand tough wastewater environments.
