Jewell Instruments' JMA MEMS accelerometer, available in Canada from Durham Instruments

A common necessity in many work applications – including engineering, biology, structural monitoring, transportation, medical applications, and more – is the ability to measure proper acceleration accurately. Hence the wide-ranging uses of accelerometers, or devices designed to measure the acceleration of an object in its own instantaneous rest frame.

Durham Instruments, a respected provider of measuring tools and instruments throughout Canada, now carries the JMA series of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) accelerometers from Jewell Instruments. These accelerometers are perfectly suited for such industries as aerospace, automation and controls, manufacturing, transportation, and the military.

Single, dual, or triple axis

Jewell produces two basic variations of the JMA MEMS accelerometer: the JMA-S, which has a single power input and a 0-5 VDC output; and the JMA-D, with a dual power input and a VDC output of plus or minus five. Both of them are available in single- (JMA-100), dual- (JMA-200), or triple-axis (JMA-300) configurations.

The JMA accelerometer works on low-cost MEMS technology and includes ±0.5, ±1, and ±1.5 g measuring ranges, and its resolution can go as small as 0.04 mg. The instrument also meets the high standards of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive, or RoHS, which is the European Union’s standard for environmentally hazardous substances in electronic equipment.

Another significant advantage of the MEMS accelerometer is its IP65 seal and 50 g shock, which enable the device to withstand the most demanding work environments. Other distinguishing features of this instrument include:

  • A robust and rugged enclosure;
  • Filtering available; and
  • A temperature-sensor option.

Workers in several different sectors will find the JMA MEMS accelerator ideal for such important applications as vehicle and railway testing, railway maintenance, acceleration and deceleration control, spacecraft testing, and lateral train control.

With its strength, accuracy, and versatility, the JMA series provides a new high in proper-acceleration measurement.
