POSITAL-Fraba has just upgraded its IXARC programmable incremental rotary encoders: users can now configure them to deliver fractional pulse rates, or fractional PPR. In other words, these rugged encoders can be programmed to transmit a single pulse for more than one shaft revolution – as low as 1/8 of a pulse per revolution.
In addition, customers can set up these incremental encoders to deliver pulse rates that are not even multiples of the number rotations; a PPR of 3½ corresponds to seven pulses for two rotations.
Reconfigured onsite with UBIFAST
Fractional PPR encoders are frequently used in conveyor and web applications to simplify control-system setup. Systems that need fractional PPR have typically used special optical encoders like the HS20-P and RS-P units by Photocraft, with the .125AJ option. POSITAL is offering these rugged IXARC magnetic encoders as a compatible yet more dependable alternative to this older technology.
These upgraded IXARC encodes employ magnetic sensing and are available with IP66/67-rated environmental protection, so they are far less vulnerable to dust or moisture than their optical counterparts are. They are also more mechanically robust, with high shock and vibration resistance. IXARC encoders can now fit into virtually any system, with a broad range of mechanical options available, including shaft type and diameter, flange and casing types, materials, and level of environmental protection.
Programmability is a special feature of these encoders: users can select key performance characteristics by setting software parameters with no mechanical changes. Fractional PPR can be set anywhere from 1/8 to eight in steps of 1/8 PPR. Integer pulse rates of up to 16,384 PPR can also be chosen. Communication interfaces are programmable, with push-pull or RS422 outputs available. Users can arrange connector pin-outs to match the Photocraft units and other products.
Customers would typically order these IXARC programmable incremental rotary encoders with the needed performance parameters preset at the factory – and then re-configure the units onsite with the convenient UBIFAST programming tool by POSITAL. This level of versatility makes these programmable encoders the perfect option for component systems in both new projects and existing systems.
