POSITAL absolute IXARC encoders: Now available with IO-Link interface

POSITAL-Fraba has recently upgraded and expanded its line of IXARC absolute rotary encoders – with support for the IO-Link communications interface. A popular, low-cost, and easy-to-implement communications system, IO-Link is designed to simplify connections between large-scale fieldbus or industrial Ethernet networks and sensor or actuator devices on the plant floor.

Available in sample quantities soon, these upgraded absolute rotary encoders will be showcased in two upcoming trade shows: SPS in Nuremberg, Germany and IREX in Tokyo.

Supports various data types

An IO-Link master gateway device has an interface to the plant-wide network on one side, and the other has multiple point-to-point connections to individual sensor devices. The interface for end devices is relatively simple, so support for complex communications protocols at the sensor/actuator level is not required. IO-Link supports various data types, from measurement information to device configuration instructions.

Based on POSITAL’s own high-precision magnetic measurement technology, IXARC absolute rotary encoders suit IO-Link implementations perfectly: they are compact, easy to install, and highly reliable, even in challenging environments. Single-turn and multi-turn versions of IO-Link connected encoders are available, and the former can be converted to operated in incremental mode by using a different pin-out arrangement in the connector.

New features on the multi-turn models include 16-bit resolution, the ability to output rotation speed to the controller directly, and electronic cam/preset/reset functionality, using binary digital signals transmitted through pin 2 of the connector. A temperature and vibration sensor integrated into the multi-turn version allows monitoring of condition parameters, and rotation counters are powered by energy harvested from the rotation of the shaft, which keeps the rotation count up to date, even when movements occur when power is unavailable. Not only does this make backup batteries unnecessary; it also lowers maintenance costs.

IO-Link connected sensors come with a broad variety of housing materials, levels of environmental protection, shaft types, and mounting flanges. Users can configure sensors with the exact mechanical and performance traits that their applications require, quickly and less expensively. With POSITAL’s online product finder, customers can find the encoders they need for their individual circumstances.
