six axis load cells

Interface's Model 6A series of six axis load cells are available from Durham Instruments.

Interface Advanced Force Measurement is an international leader in devices that measure force, and this includes versatile six axis load cells. Available from Durham Instruments, the Model 6A series of load cells measures force and torque in all six axes; in other words, they measure force and torque simultaneously in three perpendicular dimensions.

Each of these six axis load cells by Interface has low crosstalk and six full bridges that provide mV/V output on six independent channels. Force and moment-value calculation are possible with an optional Model BSC8 amplifier and software.

Five different cell designs

Compact in size and temperature-compensated, the 6A series is perfectly suited to many industrial and scientific applications in aerospace, robotics, medical research, and the automotive sector. Durham Instruments recommends these devices for general manufacturing, automation, food processing, forestry, education, the military, mining, packaging, power generation, transportation, and research and development.

Interface supplies a 36-term coefficient matrix with the device for calculating load and torque values in each axis, and this matrix must be used for calculating force and moment. The aforementioned optional BSC8 amplifier has eight channels and a USB PC interface for simplifying data analysis.

Five designs of the 6A series of six axis load cells are available:

  • Model 6A27. For integration into wind-tunnel models or handles of medical tools; also recommended for sports medicine, biomechanics, and control of assembly and handling processes in micromechanics.
  • Model 6A40. For collision detection, presence or error detection, and “teach-in”. Good for medical applications, gait analysis, sports medicine, and ergonomics.
  • Model 6A68. For similar applications to those of the 6A40, but larger.
  • Model 6A154. For wind-tunnel balances. Blends low force with high moment capacity.
  • Model 6A175. For automation, robotics, press force, and seismic studies.

Other specifications for the Model 6A series: compensated temperature range from -10 to 70 degrees Celsius; operating temperature range from -10 to 85 degrees Celsius; nonlinearity and hysteresis of plus or minus 0.1 per cent FS; creep of plus or minus 0.1 per cent in 20 minutes; and safe overload of 150 per cent of CAP.
