Denso Petrolatum Tape offers a long-lasting solution for corrosion protection on steel pipe, valves and flanges. These high performance tape products are easily applied by hand. In flange protection applications, for example, Denso tape can be applied in four simple steps.

1. Prepare the surface

Remove any loose scale, rust or other foreign material in accordance with SSPC SP2 “Hand Tool Cleaning” or SP3 “Power Tool Cleaning”. A high pressure power wash of 3,000 to 7,000 PSI can also be used. Wipe the pipe area with a clean rag to get rid of any fine particles that may have settled while cleaning.

2. Apply Denso Paste

Apply a thin layer of Denso Paste with a gloved hand, rag or brush. This paste will act as a primer for Denso Profiling Mastic and tape. Ensure the coating covers all surface areas, as this will provide maximum adhesion of the tape and long-lasting corrosion protection.

3. Use profiling mastic on irregular shapes

Apply Denso Profiling Mastic over any irregular shapes and sharp edges on the flange. Apply the mastic by hand and mould it into a rounded shape. This self-supporting sealing and moulding product provides a smooth profile and prevents tearing or cutting of the petrolatum tape.

4. Apply Denso Tape

Apply the Denso Petrolatum Tape on the prepared surface. There are two different methods that can be used: lengthwise strips or spiral wrap.

When using the lengthwise strip method, measure and cut several lengths of tape to be applied lengthwise across the flange and onto the surrounding pipe. Apply the strips while ensuring a 50 per cent overlap, and apply firm pressure after each strip is applied. Continue applying strips until the flange is covered. Next, a single wrap of tape should be applied to the centre of the flange and ends of the lengthwise tape.

The spiral wrap method requires spirally wrapping the tape around the flange and surrounding pipe. Maintain at least a one-inch overlap while wrapping. If the application calls for additional protection, use a 55 per cent overlap. Maintain slight tension while applying the tape to ensure it is tight, but do not stretch it. Smooth out all overlaps during application to achieve a complete seal.
