The Vibra-Peen machine

For more than four decades, Vibra Finish has been a top manufacturer of industrial equipment and provider of production-finishing services for thousands of clients in Ontario. Part of the company’s continuing success is in its willingness to develop innovative new technologies rather than settle with traditional methods.

In the case of metallurgy, Vibra Finish is not satisfied with the usual methods of nitriding, shot peening, or heat treating. Instead, it has invented its own exclusive machine and process – Vibra-Peen Surfacing Technology, or “vibropeening” – which results in tougher, harder metal surfaces.

How it works

Vibropeening is a method of changing the mechanical properties of metal to make lighter, stronger components and products that are less likely to break or fail. Unlike other methods of surface treatment, which convert tensile stresses into surface compressive stresses and peen over surface cracks and imperfections, Vibra-Peen Surfacing Technology reduces crack initiation and propagation by producing repeatable uniform compressive stresses.

A significant advantage of vibropeening is its reduction of surface-finish roughness. With traditional finishing methods, rough surfaces can lead to cracks and the accumulation of dirt can lead to corrosion. But with the smoother surfaces that result from Vibra-Peen, metal has less destructive friction and a better load-bearing capacity.

The Vibra-Peen machine uses a unique dual-shaft drive configuration, operated with an innovative control system, to deliver the vibration into the selected media in a controlled way. The process also requires minimal maintenance and rarely breaks down or requires a warranty claim. The vibropeening system can be custom-designed to suit the client’s wishes and applications, with the machine size depending on the size of the part.

Vibropeening is the state-of-the-art method of finishing metal surfaces, minimizing fatigue, failure, and cracking while improving the load-bearing ability. With this process, metal products and parts will be sure to have longer lives and save companies money in the long run.
