industrial acoustical arrays

Durham Instruments supplies B&K acoustical arrays.

World-renowned measurement devices by Danish producer Brüel & Kjӕr are available in Canada via Durham Instruments. Among these products is a line of industrial acoustical arrays. These instruments rapidly make detailed noise maps of different kinds of noise sources. A wide selection is available, from two-microphone units to larger arrays with hundreds of mikes. Brüel & Kjӕr manufactures several models of these arrays for a variety of applications.

Spherical, foldable, or handheld

One popular example of these acoustical arrays is one designed to detect acoustical leaks on hearing aids, with two microphones – a single-reference one and a robot-controlled one. Another available system performs quality assurance during the production of electrical transformers.

When selecting new industrial acoustical arrays to invest in, companies should take several factors into consideration: the environment (cabin interior, indoors, outdoors, or underwater); frequency range of interest; the required resolution in the noise map; distance to the source (near- or far-field); and whether the sound source is moving or stationary.

Brüel & Kjӕr makes the following kinds of industrial acoustical arrays:

  • Foldable – For outdoor use. These arrays accommodate a large measurement field that is easy to transport. Used completely flat or with arms set at an angle to produce a funnel-shaped array, allowing suppression of extraneous noise from the back of the array, by up to ten decibels.
  • Grid – For indoor use. A regular lattice of acoustical transducers (microphones or hydrophones) usually used for measurement on stationary sound fields near test objects.
  • Handheld – Indoor or in-cabin use. These measure sound field near sources where space is limited. Examples: leak detection, conformal mapping.
  • Planar wheel – Indoors or outdoors. With many diameters and microphone configurations, depending on the application. Works with PULSE beam-forming software.
  • Spherical – Indoor or in-cable use. Spherical beam forming provides a complete omni-directional noise map based on one measurement, with SHARP, a spherical, harmonics-based algorithm.

Durham Instruments has its own Customized Products Department, which helps to configure a complete system for every client need. Examples include analysis software, positioning systems, or robots.
