The Grand Coulee Dam in Washington State recently received assistance from Red-D-Arc.

Red-D-Arc Welderentals has a long history of success stories, with customers reaping great benefits from the company’s unmatched lineup of welding, heating, and power equipment. Earlier this year, Red-D-Arc was approached to help with a series of maintenance projects at the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington State. Here is how the company’s inductive heating systems played a role in keeping this dam going as a major American power supply.

Safe and reliable power

Located near the city of Grand Coulee in central Washington, the Grand Coulee Dam was completed in 1942. Producing hydroelectric power and providing irrigation water, the dam has been the United States’ largest power station by name-plate capacity since it added a third powerhouse in 1974.

The Grand Coulee Dam has been undergoing serious maintenance to make sure it can continue to produce safe, reliable power in the years to come. One stage of this maintenance required the heating of a 40-foot-wide, seven-foot-tall outer head cover of the turbine shaft to a specific core temperature. Induction heating was necessary for one side of the workpiece to achieve this temperature.

Induction heating is a simple, cost-efficient heating process that delivers quick, consistent heat in many applications, like welding fabrication and coating removal. The dam’s maintenance engineers could be sure that they had achieved the required core temperature only when the opposite side of the workpiece reached the target temperature. So they called upon the Red-D-Arc team this year to provide inductive heating systems, as well as assistance with training and setup for this important stage of the maintenance process.

The induction-heating experts at Red-D-Arc are well reputed for their innovative approach to this kind of technology and its relevant applications. The company has logged many years of experience in supporting customers involved in hydroelectric power, wind energy, nuclear power, and other energy-related projects. Red-D-Arc offers more than equipment: it also brings helpful insights into the unique challenges of every individual project.

With Red-D-Arc inductive heating systems, the Grand Coulee Dam was assured of maintenance that would keep it going for years to come.
