Using the right hoses in steel production is crucial.

Sudbury International Engineered Products Limited is Canada’s source of hosing solutions by Hose Master, including hydraulic hoses. These units offer flexible connections between hydraulic power units and the equipment they power in steel production. Because heat and hydraulics are incompatible, hydraulic power systems can experience premature hose failures unless these workplaces take proactive action. A Hose Master blog post discusses how to use these hosing solutions properly in steel plants.

Two processes for steel making

The two most common steel-making processes are electric air furnaces (EAF) and integrated mills. It is important to understand where hoses from Sudbury International can work in integrated mills. Here, liquid iron is produced in a blast furnace with iron ore, limestone, and coke. Much of this operation is usually operated with hydraulics, and chaos can result if hot coke falls onto a rubber or thermoplastic hydraulic hose. Corrugated metal hydraulic hoses are recommended for this application, since they resist the effects of orange-hot coke and offer the best blend of high working pressures and high flexibility, all at great value.

When this coke is ready to use, workers push it out of the oven and take it to a quenching tower for cooling. Then the coke is released from a quench car with hydraulically actuated dumping mechanisms, and hydraulic hoses can sustain damage if hot coke drops onto them. Some systems employ mechanical conveying systems to transfer coke to the quenching mechanism, and there may be high ambient heat conditions present. Hose Master metal hoses from Sudbury International offer rugged resistance to these extreme environments.

There are many other applications in which metal hoses outperform nonmetallic ones, including conversion furnaces, casters, and hot strip mills. Corrugated metal hoses provide long-lasting,, worry-free service in hot, corrosive conditions. They do not suffer from cracking or blistered covers or from permeation. Metal assemblies have a welded construction that provides fire resistance and positive fitting retention. External covers can add molten-splash protection. High-pressure hoses like the Hose Master PressureMax HP are ideal for hydraulic electrode clamping systems, pinch rolls, and descaling hoses.
