Examples of challenging environments

One example of a very challenging work environment is flue gas desulphurization. Because of the wet atmosphere at both inlet and outlet locations, a lot of standard expansion joints available on the market do not fare well in this setting. Another frequent issue is that a standard joint has a cavity that can fill with acidic liquid, which then penetrates the unit and degrades the bond between the elastomer and reinforcement plies. This results in weaker tensile strength, and the expansion joint eventually deteriorates completely. And still another problem with using conventional joints in flue gas desulphurization is that certain weather conditions lead to stack draft, which causes pressure fluctuation.

Fortunately, NISCO can supply a special kind of flex joint that HOLZ has developed to deal with these harsh work conditions. The innovative FGD flex element can withstand acid contamination with its outer flex element, which has been constructed out of durable, acid-resistant Viton. This joint also includes an inner gas seal built out of a polytetrafluoroethylene barrier with zero porosity. The FGD flex element has passed the test in the field many times, with an ability to handle pressure shifts of up to five pounds per square inch, gauge.
