The Type 4128D head and torso simulator (HATS)

Brüel & Kjær is one of the major manufacturing partners of Durham Instruments, offering a broad wealth of industrial solutions for Canadian businesses. This line includes the unique Type 4128D head and torso simulator (HATS) – a mannequin with built-in ear and mouth simulators, providing a realistic reproduction of the acoustic properties of an average adult human head and torso. This device has numerous use scenarios, ranging from phone handsets to hearing aids.

Accurate placing of telephone handsets

Durham Instruments offers 11 kinds of acoustic sensors in total, including six models of Brüel & Kjær HATS devices. Customers use these sensors to measure and transmit sound and vibration with high fidelity. The Type 4128D HATS is designed to be used for in situ electro-acoustics tests on many units, such as telephone handsets, headsets, audio conference devices, microphones, headphones, hearing aids, hearing protectors, and Smart Speakers. It is also useful for measurements on hands-free communication devices, mobile and domestic telephones, and more.

Like other HATS models available, this head and torso simulator includes built-in ear and mouth simulators that offer realistic reproductions of adult human acoustic properties. What sets the Type 4128D model apart is that it comes with a Type 4606 handset positioner, with pressure/force and position readouts for accurate, repeatable placing of telephone handsets for electro-acoustic measurements, in both standardized and user-defined positions. The Type 4606 makes the HATS an innovative telephone test rig for measurement, according to ITU-T recommendations.

Other notable features of this head and torso simulator:

  • adjustable neck angle, to allow realistic posture;
  • individual calibration information included;
  • adaptability to a broad range of telephone-handset styles;
  • simple configuration for standardized and user-defined mounting positions;
  • graduated adjustment in three planes about the ear reference point;
  • spring-loaded mounting of the handset against the ear with adjustable pressure force; and
  • positioning on both ears that simulates right- and left-handed handset users.

The Type 4128D HATS and its accompanying Type 4606 handset positioner are recommended for applications in education, the medical field, and research and development, according to Durham Instruments.
