HBM manufactures six designs of strain gauges in its M series, available from Durham Instruments.

Durham Instruments is a leading source of industrial measurement devices, and one of the manufacturers with whom it partners is HBM Test and Measurement. HBM produces a potent line of strain gauges, the M series, specifically developed for high resistance to alternating loads at increased strain levels.

The M series includes six designs of strain gauges, with different geometries for various applications.

Can withstand high temperatures

These instruments are foil strain gauges with measuring grids built out of a special nickel-chromium alloy. Able to operate in temperatures as high as 300 degrees Celsius, the M series is available with varying grid lengths and temperature response matching.

HBM has designed these strain gauges specifically to tackle the challenge of fibre composites and other new materials offering high strength; these can be tough for measuring gauges when pushing components to their mechanical performance limits. Sometimes, a strain gauge is weakened and fails earlier than the component under test when it is subjected to alternating loads at increased load levels. With the M series, users can reliably test materials featuring high strength.

The six versions of the M series are as follows:

  • A linear gauge with one measuring grid, for strain measurement in one direction.
  • This T rosette has two measuring grids arranged at an angle of 90 degrees to each other. Recommended for measurement of tensile and compressive stress.
  • A stacked T rosette, similar to the TM1.
  • A V-shaped gauge with two measuring grids arranged at an angle of plus or minus 45 degrees. Recommended for determining torsion and shear stress.
  • This rectangular rosette has three measuring grids arranged at zero-, 45-, and 90-degree angles, plus a biaxial stress state with unknown principal stress directions.
  • A stacked rosette, similar to the RM8.

Three measuring grid lengths are available: 1½, three, and six millimetres.

Durham Instruments recommends the M series for use in many industries, including manufacturing, aerospace, automation, food processing, forestry, the medical field, the military, mining, packaging, utilities, transportation, and research and development.
