HARTING’s MICA 2 mini-computer gives users far more processing power

One of the many innovative solutions available from HARTING Canada is the MICA (Modular Industry Computing Architecture) product family, which is an industry standard for myriad application challenges. Last year, the company introduced the MICA 2 mini-computer, which offers substantially more computing power than previous MICA systems did. This is a universal modular platform for capturing data, processing it at the machine level, and exchanging it in wireless and wired fashion.

Easy to add other KPIs

The MICA 2 is expanding HARTING’s computing capabilities to unprecedented new areas. This mini-computer gives users three to five times the computing power that the MICA Basic offered for demanding data acquisition and processing. With the MICA Wireless with 2G/3G/4G, 802.11a/b/g/n and Glonass, users can carry out data acquisition and communication without any cabling. The MICA Energy allows the user to read, compress, and transfer data from current meters and transformers to MES, ERP, and Cloud systems.

One can also perform analysis and visualization directly on the MICA by integrating the OpenSource time-series database InfluxDB and the dashboard software Grafana. HARTING also offers MICA kits that original equipment manufacturers, customers, and third-party developers can equip with customer-specific function boards.

Sensor and data fusion with the MICA 2 increases the operational value of the mini-computer, especially in the production of circuit boards and other manufacturing and quality-control processes. A key example is combining RFID tags on circuit boards with energy, compressed air, and optical sensors in order to monitor a production line, correlate production steps with energy consumption at any time, and collect and preprocess data for predictive maintenance.

A major advantage of the MICA 2 – as determined through initial trial runs by the HARTING team – is the ease of adding other key performance indicators (KPIs) via the planned applications. Such KPIs can include machine running times or asset management of tools using the modular MICA architecture.
