Harting has won the coveted HERMES Award for its Harting IIC MICA (Modular Industry Computing Architecture), the company’s mini industrial computer. The honour was announced at the opening ceremony for Hannover Messe 2016, in Hannover, Germany, and marks the second time the company has won the award.

“The HERMES Award is the world’s most important innovation prize for industry,” explains Philip Harting, CEO of the company’s technology group. “We are very excited about this important victory. It highlights the innovative capacity of our engineers and developers.”

The first time Harting earned a HERMES Award was in 2006 for an RFID solution.

About MICA

The Harting MICA is a lightweight, compact industrial computer with an open and modular platform that features embedded hardware and software for Industry 4.0. The device provides existing machinery and systems with intelligence, allowing companies to transition their factories into “smart factories”.

MICA functions as a small, cost-effective computing unit between terminal devices and the higher-level IT system. It has the capability to temporarily save, evaluate and process data in the immediate vicinity of machinery and equipment, and it features intermediate memory and aggregating, which offers relief for computer centres.

MICA can be customized to fit the user’s precise needs, with custom hardware, software and interfaces. For example, to optimize network connectivity, the front bezel can be customized with the proper connectors to fit the application.

The system is designed for harsh industrial and railway environments, and does not require any maintenance. It is resistant to dust, moisture and temperature fluctuations. In addition to all of these advantages, MICA is easy to use. The touch-optimized interface is implemented entirely in HTML5 and JavaScript, and it can be customized by developers without any special tools.

Additional details

Harting is proud of the savings MICA can offer its customers. The company explains that the one-time investment for MICA is significantly lower than a complete industrial PC. Plus, there are no licensing or leasing fees.
