But it was insufficient for applications that demanded flexibility and reliability under rugged conditions. This was why the ix Industrial, available from HARTING Canada, was developed. With rapid advances in miniaturization, engineers and end users have more flexibility in designing systems. Programmable logic controllers and drives are smaller, so users can mount them to equipment directly, allowing modular system design. This places critical components and their Ethernet connection in challenging environments, subjecting them to possible vibration and frequent connection cycles.

The RJ45 has a bulky form factor that limits its use to smaller components, so maximizing board space is difficult. It also has a connector clip that is not compatible with frequent connect-disconnect cycles and can be vulnerable to prolonged vibration; one weak or broken clip can stall an entire operation. For these reasons, HARTING developed the ix Industrial as an alternative.

This connector engineered for full reverse compatibility and integration with existing systems. An ix Industrial can be used on one end of a cable with an RJ45 on the other end, enabling connection with multiple devices. The ix Industrial also guarantees connection speed performance, because it has been tested and certified according to the approved Cat 6A performance standard for 1/10GB/s Ethernet connection.

The ix Industrial has a compact, robust construction that meets the reliability needs of harsh work environments. The connector can withstand shock and vibration in applications in which the RJ45 was inadequate, like in vehicles or equipment-mounted controls. It also has a dual locking tab design, with tabs on either side, allowing tighter connections through up to 5,000 mating cycles.
