A UIC 558 circular connector by HARTING, with bulkhead mounted housing

Among the innovative connectivity solutions available from HARTING Canada are devices designed specifically for the rail industry. In May, the corporation announced that it was expanding its large selection for railway applications with two new, robust interfaces that comply with the requirements of the International Union of Railways (UIC) 558 standard.

UIC 558 connectors were initially developed to meet the demand for 18-conductor cable to facilitate backwards communications compatibility for unconverted rail carriages.

Space for 13/18 pins

The two new interfaces include inserts offering space for 13 or 18 pins, and HARTING also developed an additional option with 22 pins and a PE for inter-car jumpers. Customers now have access to interfaces for connecting remote-control and data-transmission lines to locomotive-hauled passenger trains. The lifelines of rail vehicles transmit information and signals for the remote control of lighting, the operation of door-opening systems, and the transmission of acoustic data and digital information packets.

A crucial requirement of the UIC 558 standard is that an interface must automatically release above a certain tensile force. This safety function causes the interface halves to separate non-destructively if two electrically connected vehicles move apart. HARTING UIC 558 connectors are very robust, which is highlighted in part by their IP69 degree of protection; in addition, they passed a salt-spray test for more than 500 hours to meet the ASTM B117 standard.

One criterion of the UIC 558 standard is that rail vehicles that use compliant interfaces must be sustainably equipped and that they can be docked to wagons and vehicles of varying ages at the same time. UIC 588 connectors offer extra safety through a mechanical and visual coding option, which enables fault-free operation.

As per this requirement, the new HARTING Han S connector line allows safe, error-free installation and complies with all of the relevant UL standards – such as IEC 61373, category 2, which denotes adequate protection from vibration and shock. In addition, the materials used in these units meet the fire-protection requirements of the IEC 45545 (class: HL3/R23) standard, as well as the UL-94 V-00 criterion of low flammability.
