The Firestorm 70 reboat, owned by Metalcraft

For nearly 75 years, including eight years through its Canadian affiliate, HARTING has accumulated countless success stories in helping customers with technological solutions. A key example occurred several years ago, when Metalcraft Marine – a boat-building company in Kingston, Ont. – needed high-end power connectors for its largest rescue reboat. The HARTING team recommended its innovative Han-Modular connector series to keep this vessel moving.

Made of glass fibre-reinforced thermoplastic

The Firestorm 70 was a $5 million aluminum-hulled reboat that acted as a veritable remote command centre. Seventy feet long, this award-winning boat could achieve a speed of 46 knots, and its firefighting system could pump 17,000 gallons per minute at 130 pounds per square inch while streaming at three times the typical discharge rate of older reboats.

Metalcraft wanted to remain competitive with other shipyards, and one option for keeping expenses low was to switch to connector-based wiring assemblies. The company approached HARTING Canada for the best solution. HARTING proposed its IP65-compliant Han-Eco series of power connectors. These connectors were made of glass fibre-reinforced thermoplastic, and the corrosion-resistant series weighed and cost less. HARTING’s Han-Modular inserts typically fit Han-Eco power connectors, which enabled them to stream combinations of power, signal, fibre optic, coax, D-Sub, and pneumatic through the same unit.

The customer installed six Han-Eco units on the Firestorm 70 to connect wiring from the wheelhouse to the hull; two of them connected the wheelhouse to the arch/mast, while one connected the wheelhouse and rooftop water cannon. Adopting these connectors was compatible with Metalcraft’s goal to develop modular, standardized content to accelerate the design-and-build process. The connectors also increased flexibility in designing signal connections for the company, which had previously been restricted by electrical connectors that had accommodated only one or two wire sizes.

The HARTING connectors also bridged pneumatic and coaxial signals as they passed through the cabin ceiling, reducing the amount of ceiling penetrations. In addition, far fewer hired-wired connections were necessary, turning a two-week installation job into a single-day one.

With HARTING by its side, the Firestorm 70 was equipped to rescue more seafarers.
