Glass manufacturer cuts out waste

Pegasus Glass has a goal of zero waste. The Cambridge, Ont.-based glass manufacturer created its “ZerOwaste project” with the intent to recycle or reuse virtually everything it produces or consumes — eliminating 95 to 98 per cent of all potential waste destined for landfill.

The company is targeting three areas to help achieve this goal.

• Glass: All internal scrap or broken glass is crushed down to granules or powder and re-used for various projects and products.
• Paper: Office papers are collected and shredded, and virtually all items used by employees are recycled or reused.
• Packaging: The company has eliminated plastic packing peanuts and replaced them with shredded cardboard packaging. This 100 per cent recyclable packaging is made up of Pegasus Glass’ scrap cardboard that has been created by its cardboard shredder.

“This project is not only helpful to us by lowering our operational costs, but it helps the environment by reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill,” the company says. “It is also a goal of ours to help our customers by lowering their costs, as well, as a result of our environmental stewardship.”
