Festo’s smart and slick Handling Guide Online (HGO) is now available, giving engineers the tools to easily design an electric robotic handling system for a machine or process in as little as five minutes.

A simplified process

This new, web-based engineering tool, which was introduced last December at the International Press Conference held at Festo’s new digital factory in Scharnhausen, Germany, simplifies the design process for systems like slides and gantries by modularizing components based on an analysis of more than 700 different project applications. The HGO uses data keyed in by the customer, and draws on this pre-defined, standardized content to create the optimal solution for the unique customer application. And it is completed in just three simple steps.

How it works

Unlike other design processes where customers have to select and size individual components, the HGO takes a more simplified — and faster — approach. It prompts the customer to provide data describing the application requirement. For example, perhaps the requirement is 3D movements for a pick and place solution. Once this step is completed, the customer adds data such as the weight of the payload to be moved, the type of axis (electric or pneumatic), working stroke, motor position, etc.

When the design is completed, the customer can download the CAD model and data sheet for immediate use, without charge. Festo then sends the customer a net quote for the device. Since Festo recently centralized production of electric handling systems at a single plant in Germany, it can deliver the finished product in as little as three weeks (rather than the eight or more it took in the past), and at a lower cost.

A versatile tool

The HGO can be used for ordering all kinds of robotic handling systems, including single axis, linear, planar surface and 3D gantries, miniature, highly dynamic or application-specific. If the available options don’t meet the application requirements, the customer can send Festo the application data and receive a quote for a custom product.

A leading solutions provider

This is yet another tool from Festo that helps its customers save time and money, allowing them to be more productive. As a global leader in automation technology, Festo has earned a reputation for offering innovative pneumatic and electric drive technology, whether it’s individual products or ready-to-install solutions.
