Bergen offers several cable construction styles.

Bergen Cable is observing its 80th anniversary as a major international supplier of the strongest cable assemblies for industrial use. Since the company has a diverse customer base with widely differing cable needs, Bergen provides its cable products in different construction options, resulting in four types of cable forms. With this unique diversity in cable construction, Bergen clients know that the company can offer a solution to suit any individual requirement.

Strength, flexibility, and stretch ranges

Different applications require different levels of strength and abrasion or corrosion resistance. So Bergen supplies cable assemblies with products that are constructed out of various materials. The two most commonly used materials are stainless steel and galvanized carbon steel. The latter is most suited to applications that need high strength but in which corrosion resistance is not as important. Galvanized carbon steel has a zinc coating that protects it from corrosive elements and is not as expensive as stainless steel.

Stainless steel cable is recommended for tasks that justify the higher cost and in which corrosion is a key factor. Type 302 stainless steel is the most popular; it is 18 per cent chromium and eight per cent nickel alloy. This material is common due to its corrosion resistance and high strength. Bergen recommends Type 305 stainless steel for non-magnetic properties.

Four cable styles are available from Bergen Cable:

  • 1 x 7. This style provides the lowest amount of stretch. Larger diameters come with relative stiffness, and smaller ones have the stiffest construction.
  • 1 x 19. A fairly flexible cable style with a smooth exterior that resists compressive forces. The ones with diameters that exceed 3/32 of an inch are the strongest cable forms.
  • 7 x 7. A style Bergen most recommends for use in general-purpose construction applications due to its strength and high flexibility. It particularly suits use over pulleys. Other benefits of this form include abrasion resistance and durability.
  • 7 x 19. The strongest, most flexible, and most stretchable product type that is available from Bergen’s lineup. Most highly recommended for pulleys.
