Norpak offers many solutions for pallets.

Norpak Handling Ltd. supplies many types of conveyors, including those that can handle heavy-duty applications involving pallets, which can be heavy and bulky. When a business selects a material-handling system for pallets, it is crucially important to consider what kinds of pallets will be moved. This is because pallet type has a deep influence on how the conveyor is going to be used to optimize results for the process.

Wood, plastic, or steel

Wood pallets, plastic pallets, plastic containers, and steel racks make up the four most common types of pallets transported on conveyors. Arguably the most familiar to most people, wood pallets are frequently made of GMA wood and assembled with nails, serving as platforms on which workers can stack products and arrange them stably. They typically have a few bottom boards that make contact with the conveyor; since the boards are spaced far apart, workers should position the boards perpendicularly to the conveyor’s rollers, to enable smooth conveyance and to space the rollers further apart. If this is not possible, the conveyor must be outfitted with extra rollers.

If built in the same way, plastic pallets are as easy to convey as wooden ones are. Multi-footed plastic thermoform pallets are difficult because of their stumps, so they require a special type of conveyor.

Plastic containers have many varying designs that pose challenges; they can have smooth bottoms, distinct rail patterns, or ribbed or honeycomb patterns. Those with more complex patterns can be harder to convey and may need conveyor rollers with close centres, multiple chain strands, or wide belted surfaces. Norpak has the skills to customize a conveyor solutions to meet these challenges.

Steel racks are also less uniform than wood pallets in design, typically available with either two steel runners or “picture frame” bottoms. Users may require roller chains or multiple lanes of narrow rollers for added support and stability, depending on the construction of the racks. Steel racks can cause more damage to conveyors, so if they are the only option, a more intensive maintenance and inspection routine should be adopted.
