Company founder Jacques Chevrier

Chevrier Instruments Inc. is one of Canada’s premier providers of test and measurement devices for workplace applications – with a broad selection of measurement innovation for various tasks. The distributor offers an unsurpassed range, including thermometers, gauges, humidity instruments, and hygrometers, from such manufacturers as KIMO, Fluke, Rotronic, Sauermann, TSI, and Kessler.

The company is observing its 45th anniversary this year – 45 years of growth, expansion, and success as a family enterprise.

A great career risk

The company’s history stretches back nearly 70 years – back to the time when young Quebec native Jacques Chevrier had just finished his commerce studies at the University of Ottawa. He went on the road as a sales representative, a journey that led him to success as the sole Quebec representative of Montreal company Baker Instruments, which was an Ontario distributor of industrial measurement innovation in the late 1960s.

During his stint at Baker, Jacques Chevrier met a professor of instrumentation named Pierre Ménard. This professor taught him in full detail about calibration and repair of measuring instruments. This new education gave Chevrier the confidence to take a great career risk – founding his own distribution company. He did this in 1975, with help from his friend Ménard and his wife Madeleine.

In its third year, the new firm was incorporated and became known as La Cie. J. Chevrier Instruments Inc. The company kept growing, and Jacques hired his sons, Pierre and Denis, to repair manometers as they continued their studies. After he graduated from business school, younger brother Marc joined the company too. By the end of 2011, the business was employing three generations of the Chevrier family, as Denis’ daughter Catherine had been hired.

Jacques Chevrier passed away five years ago, but the distribution company under his name lives on. The family tradition continues too, with Marc Chevrier now serving as the company’s general manager and Denis Chevrier as the technical director. Through it all, Chevrier Instruments has held on to its top priority: supplying top measurement innovation, service, and technical support through skilled, cordial staff.
