The Interface six-axis multi-axis load cell

Interface Force Measurement Solutions teams up with Durham Instruments to make its multi-axis load cell available in Canada. This device can measure forces and torques in three mutually perpendicular axes and three simultaneous torques about those same axes, all at the same time. Eight distinct models of this compact, temperature-compensated load cell are available – the 6A27, 6A40, 6A68, 6A80, 6A110, 6A130, 6A154, and 6A225; an eight-channel data-acquisition/amplifier, the BX8, is also available with USB PC interface to simplify data analysis.

Output on six independent channels

This multi-axis load cell is suited for many industrial and scientific applications in such sectors as aerospace, robotics, orthopedic and biomechanical medical research, and the automotive industry, according to Interface. In addition to these, Durham Instruments recommends the device for use in general manufacturing, automation, food processing, forestry, education, the military, mining, packaging, power generation, alternative energy, transportation, and research and development.

Each version of this Interface unit has six full bridges that provide mV/V output on six independent channels, as well as low crosstalk and a 36-term coefficient matrix for calculating the load and torque values in each axis. The device has capacities ranging from 50 to 500,000 newtons of force and one to 20,000 newton metres of torque.

Among the applications for the various models of this multi-axis load cell:

  • 6A27: integration into wind-tunnel models and handles of medical tools, sports medicine, biomechanics, and assembly control.
  • 6A40: collision detection, teach-in, presence or error detection, prosthetics, orthopedics, gait analysis, sports medicine, and ergonomics.
  • 6A68: same as the 6A40.
  • 6A80: same as the 6A40, minus gait analysis and with force or torque-controlled operation.
  • 6A110: same as the 6A80.
  • 6A130: same as the 6A80.
  • 6A154: wind-tunnel balances and combining low force with high moment capacity.
  • 6A175: automation and robotics, press force, and seismic studies.
