broaching services and machines

Ohio Broach has grown from a garage startup to a major force in the broaching industry.

The Ohio Broach & Machine Company has been satisfying customers with world-class broaching services and machines for more than six decades now. That kind of longevity is rare for a company, and it serves as an important selling point – a sign of experience, industry knowledge, and continuing success at providing great solutions.

But Ohio Broach’s reputation did not come from nowhere. It is the result of years of growth, hard work, and constant pursuit of innovation.

Humble origins in a garage

It all started in 1956, when a Cleveland entrepreneur named Charles “Bud” Van De Motter founded a business in his father’s four-car garage. Bud focused his small company on designing, manufacturing, and sharpening broach tools for local customers. Soon, demand for broaching-equipment rebuilding and contract production broaching motivated him to expand his practice. As Ohio Broach’s scope in broaching services and machines broadened, the company required more space. In the early 1960s, it moved into a bigger facility.

The company hit a major turning point in the late 1960s, when Ohio Broach launched an exclusive line of broaching machines. When this product line took off, the company’s design, sharpening, and production services expanded further. By 1974, another big move was necessary. So Ohio Broach moved to its current home – a 20,000-square-foot facility in Willoughby, OH.

But the company’s growth did not stop there. The building space has increased to more than 50,000 square feet since then. Ohio Broach also earned ISO certification in 1998, upgrading it to ISO 9001:2008 ten years ago. Today, the business employs about 35 people and sells broaching services and machines to customers all over the world, bringing in more than $7 million in revenue per year. In addition to its American and Canadian clients, Ohio Broach sells equipment to manufacturers in Mexico, Europe, Israel, the Philippines, South Korea, and China.

When Bud Van De Motter launched his humble business in a garage, he might not have imagined that he was creating a major force in the broaching industry, one that is still making a difference 62 years later.
