Company co-founder Georg Endress in 1955.

Endress+Hauser Canada Ltd. is the Canadian branch of one of the largest instrumentation suppliers worldwide. This corporation has grown for well over six decades, from a small local business to the international prominence it holds today. Since its humble beginnings in a private apartment in Lörrach, Germany, Endress+Hauser has kept sustainable success at its core throughout its history, providing top technological solutions for businesses everywhere.

An engineer and bank manager

The Endress+Hauser story began in 1953, when two men collaborated to found a new measurement-instrumentation company – Georg Endress, a 29-year-old Swiss engineer, and Ludwig Hauser, a middle-aged German bank manager. With the former’s vision and the latter’s financial expertise, this unlikely duo had a formula for success. At the time, instrumentation suppliers made devices on which users had to read and gauge measured values by hand. Endress saw enormous potential in manufacturing instruments with new electronic level measurement technology. Hauser used his business savvy to steer the new business through its early days.

The company, L. Hauser KG, began with a starting capital of 2,000 Deutschmarks, but began to grow quickly. In 1957, the founders changed the business’ name to Endress+Hauser, and Endress continued to run the company for another 38 years. Along the way, Endress opened up new markets and application fields, all specializing in level measurement, and developed the business into a full-range supplier of processing solutions.

In 1995, Endress was ready to hand the reins over to his son, Klaus Endress. By then, the company had grown into a worldwide force among instrumentation suppliers with about 4,300 employees. The younger Endress was ready to meet the challenges of globalization and its effect on Endress+Hauser’s services and solutions. Following a strategy of sustainable growth, Klaus Endress enhanced the corporation’s large product lineup while committing it to a strong company culture.

And the company remains successful today. With current focuses on digitalization, Industrial Internet of Things applications, and laboratory/process analysis, Endress+Hauser now owns subsidiaries in all six continents – including its Canadian affiliate in Burlington, Ont. – with more than 13,900 employees worldwide.
