For decades, Bergen’s Safety Cable has revolutionized aerospace fastener retention

Bergen Safety Cable has been an aerospace standard since its invention in 1987.

Bergen Cable has supplied world-class cable products since the 1940s. Reduction in installation time

Bergen Cable developed Safety Cable in collaboration with General Electric Aircraft Engines back in 1987. This cable was tested on engines at the GE Aircraft Engine facilities, where it was found to reduce installation time by 50 per cent, with consistently superior quality and lower assembly costs. Since then, it has become the standard in the industry for fastener retention.

The Safety Cable system consists of the following four elements:

• Safety Cable tool. Bergen provides tools for cable with diameters of .022, .032, and .04, with nose lengths of three, five, or seven inches. These tools also come with 360-degree rotating noses, which enable easy use in nonstandard positions.
• Safety Cable. Cable lengths range from nine to 36 inches; materials include 304 or 321 stainless steel, Inconel 600 for high-temperature or non-magnetic applications, or Inconel 625 for anti-corrosion protection. Self-looping cables are recommended for fasteners without holes, while filler washers are available for those with oversized lock-wire holes.
• Ferrules. Bergen Cable offers a spring-loaded magazine containing 50 ferrules, which come in the same materials and diameters as the cable itself does. Elongated ferrules, which enable proper retention of fasteners with limited clearance, are available.
• Accessories. Accessories include the following options: torque blocks, which allow periodic verification of tool settings, so users can ensure correct tool operation quickly; precision torque wrenches for use with the torque blocks; cutter gripper tools, which are used for safely and efficiently removing the cable and lock wire; and electronic load testers, which are available for tension and ferrule pull-off tests.
