HBM's M Series of foil strain gauges

Durham Instruments is one of the premier Canadian sources of measurement devices for industrial use, including a wide range of products by HBM Test and Measurement. HBM manufactures several models of strain gauges, including the M Series. These are foil strain gauges used for stress analysis of materials with high fatigue strength, like fibre composites. Businesses in some industries, such as aerospace and sporting goods, also use them in product development.

A very large temperature range

These foil strain gauges are versatile products that are very helpful in many other sectors. Durham Instruments suggests using them in general manufacturing, automation, food processing, forestry, education, the medical field, the military, mining, packaging, power generation, alternative energy, transportation, and research and development.

Another benefit of HBM’s M Series is its very large temperature range. These foil strain gauges allow for frequent repetition of measurements, even in case of high strain, due to their excellent fatigue life. Users can combine different geometries, resistance values, measuring grid lengths, and other properties to configure the ideal strain gauge.

The M Series comes in various geometries and sizes, with a temperature range from -200 to 300 degrees Celsius, up to 10,000,000 load cycles at plus or minus 2,000 µm/m fatigue loading, and measuring grid lengths from 1.5 to six millimetres. Each is available with temperature responses adapted to several materials, including ferritic steel, austenitic steel, aluminum, silica/composite/ titanium and grey cast iron, plastic, and molybdenum. The number of temperature matching codes ranges from one (for ferritic steel) to nine (for molybdenum).

Available in 350 and 1,000 ohms, M Series gauges also have solder tabs with strain relief. The measuring grid consists of special nickel-chromium alloy, while the measuring-grid carrier is made out of glass-fibre reinforced phenolic resin. Six different models are available from stock, with maximum excitation voltage ranging from seven to 27 volts. Durham Instruments offers quick delivery for preferred strain-gauge types, all available from factory stock.

For more than 40 years, Durham Instruments has distributed high-quality electronic instrumentation across Canada. HBM is one of its many great partners.
