Bergen Cable manufactures preformed wire rope, among many other products.

As an internationally renowned manufacturer and supplier of cable-related products, particularly for the aerospace sector, Bergen Cable knows its way around wire rope better than almost anybody else in the industry does. While some tend to use the term “wire rope” interchangeably with “cable”, the former term actually refers to multilayered cable, with wire strands wrapped around a centre wire.

One style of wire rope that Bergen offers is preformed wire rope, in which the individual wires in the strands and the strands in the rope are preformed into proper shapes before assembly in the finished rope.

Retaining the right position

The main advantage of preformed wire rope is that its structure eliminates the tendency of the wires and strands to straighten. As a result, the rope retains its proper position, which makes installation and handling easier, while reducing the chances of damage.

Bergen identifies five unique traits of preformed wire rope that users may find beneficial:

  1. While standard wire rope requires seizing to retain its structure when cut, preformed wire rope removes this necessity.
  2. The broken rope ends do not untwist, which increases the rope’s salvage value.
  3. Preformed wire rope is substantially free from twisting. It is therefore more compatible with Long lay and wire-core construction than standard wire rope is.
  4. Because of the lack of internal stress, preformed wire rope is more resistant to fatigue from bending. So this rope is especially suited to applications that require the ability to withstand bending, as well as those involving large outer wires.
  5. Preformed wire rope is safer for workers because the outer wires wear thinner before they break, eliminating the chances of broken wire ends protruding and injuring users’ hands. This also reduces the likelihood of broken ends nicking and distorting adjacent wires or adding wear to sheaves and drums. This also means that worn preformed wire ropes require greater care during inspection, as the broken ends do not porcupine, as they would in a standard wire rope.
