Festo has expanded its highly diversified portfolio with the introduction of its new EMCA positioning drive. Coming from the global leader in automation technology, it’s no surprise that this compact, easy-to-install, integrated drive system is ideal for a wide range of automated manufacturing applications.

Key features and advantages

Festo’s EMCA drive features a maintenance-free, wear-resistant, brushless DC motor with built-in power and control electronics, all in a rugged, compact housing. This design, which took home a prestigious product design award from IF Design Awards, eliminates the need for long motor cables, improves electromagnetic compatibility and requires less space than comparable setups using separate components. In addition, the unit’s built-in monitoring functions ensure safety and reliability.

EMCA is equipped with a 24 VDC power supply. It senses absolute position using a single-turn encoder or optional multi-turn displacement encoder for up to four billion revolutions. The unit is available in two motor lengths and power classes, and can deliver peak torque of up to 0.91 Nm, with a maximum rotational speed of 3,500 RPM and peak power output of up to 200 W. The motor housing provides IP54 degree of protection as standard, with IP65 available as an option. EMCA also supports ”safe torque off”, ensuring there is no risk to the user’s system from the motor continuing to rotate in case of emergency.

Downloading the Festo Configuration Tool (FCT) software makes parameterization and commissioning quick and simple via an Ethernet interface, with 64 freely programmable position sets. The EMCA can be controlled via fieldbuses, including CANopen, Ethernet/IP and I/O-Interface, with EtherCAT and PROFINET pending.

Ideal industries and applications

Thanks to these features and more, the EMCA is ideal for use in demanding industrial environments where it can support a wide range of automated applications, including format changeovers in paper processing, woodworking, packaging and assembly systems, as well as applications like roller adjustment, workpiece alignment, tool setting and positioning in automatic coiling systems. EMCA can be easily integrated with Festo’s wide range of electro-mechanical axis as part of a complete robotic handling system.
