SMS electric axes are an innovative engineering and manufacturing breakthrough that compares with pneumatics but offers the low energy consumption and data generation characteristics of electrics.

From March 20 to 23, Chicago’s McCormick Place is the place to be for ProMat, the largest North American supply-chain exhibition. The Festo Group, a world leader in electric automation solutions, will be exhibiting at booth N8118 – showcasing some of the company’s latest innovations, like the unique Simplified Motion Series (SMS).

Among the Festo products being showcased are SMS axes, decentralized input/output systems, productivity tools, and gantry robots for pick-and-place tasks.

Engineering and manufacturing breakthrough

Festo highlights its machine-mounted SMS axes, an innovative engineering and manufacturing breakthrough. These axes are comparable in cost and ease of installation with pneumatics, with extra benefits like low energy consumption and the data-generation characteristics of servo electrics. SMS axes have motors with integrated servo drives and IO-Link. Only Festo provides simple electric axes with such abilities and advantages at so low a price.

Also showcased is the CPX-AP-I decentralized I/O module, which seamlessly integrates with Ethernet communications networks from Rockwell, Beckhoff, Siemens, and other PLC manufacturers. This module accommodates more than 80 digital and analog input blocks, valve manifolds, and IO-Link master modules for extensive control and data-acquisition capabilities per interface.

Among the engineering productivity tools for electric motion, all free and accessible online, are SMS solutions finder, Electric Motion Sizing for error-free sizing of linear and rotary electromechanical systems, Festo Automation Suite for simplified commissioning, a configuration tool for the CMMT-ST motor controller, and PARTdatamanager. The Festo Handling Guide Online (HGO) will also be featured at ProMat.

The EXCT linear gantry robot is designed for small-footprint pick-and-place applications. It is rated at 90 picks per minute, with an accuracy of plus or minus 0.1 millimetre. This unit excels at fast, flexible positioning, a low profile, and a low centre of gravity. The ProMat demo pairs the EXCT with a Festo Motion Control Package designed control panel, which auto-configures control panels based on HGO generated information.

Festo electric-motion solutions help equipment manufacturers simplify design and acquisition, to speed up product available in the market. Users also create more compact, flexible, and high-performance solutions and rationalize inventory for lower carrying costs.
