Festo’s “eMotion Butterflies”, developed by the manufacturer’s Bionic Learning Network, will fly for the first time in Toronto at the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show (CMTS), taking place September 25-28 at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ont.

How the butterflies can impact manufacturing

The Bionic Learning Network is known for innovative R&D that takes inspiration from nature to find simple, yet highly efficient techniques like manipulation, movement and positioning that can be incorporated into new products for industry.

The company’s “eMotionButterflies” fly in a way that closely mimics actual butterflies, thanks to advanced miniaturization and materials. They can set their own flight-paths, even in changing environments. These and other Festo state-of-the-art technologies will help shape the factories of tomorrow. They will be highly useful in creating smart processes on production lines, making them self-adjusting, self-diagnosing and self-configuring to improve production efficiency and reliability, as well as product quality.

“Industry 4.0 is more than a buzzword; it’s here [and] it’s real products that will further enhance manufacturing productivity,” says Roger Hallet, president and CEO of Festo Canada. “You aren’t likely to ever need eMotion Butterflies, but the technologies they utilize will find their way into new Festo products that will make your business more globally competitive.”

Festo solutions coming to market soon, like its Bionic Cobot, BionicMotionRobot and Octopus Gripper, employ techniques initially isolated through research from the Bionic Learning Network.

Additional details

Live demonstrations of the eMotion Butterflies are open to all CMTS attendees. There will be three demos on each day, September 25-27, and two on September 28. For the full schedule of bionic demos at CMTS 2017, click here.
