Festo has added two larger variants to its EXCM compact planar gantry series. The new EXCM-30 and EXCM-40 units are ideal for performing sub-assembly functions in benchtop configurations or in other small work spaces, combining high functionality with a compact design.

Meet the new additions

Both the EXCM-30 and EXCM-40 are cost-effective plug-and-play solutions for small automation jobs in assembly, handling systems and medical laboratory devices that involve two- or three axis Cartesian motion. These units have scalable strokes along the X- and Y-axes, and are compatible with cleanroom applications.

The EXCM-30 is ideally suited for small parts assembly and handling applications, or in electronics manufacturing and laboratory processes. For example, they are an excellent choice for feeding and screwing in smaller components, applying adhesive points or testing electronics. The unit’s precise and robust recirculating ball bearing guide absorbs large forces and torques, even at high speeds. The cover of the Y-axis provides basic protection against the ingress and discharge of particles. This is a critical feature, particularly for those instances where upside-down installation is required.

The EXCM-40, on the other hand, offers an even larger working area of up to 78 inches (2000 millimetres) in the X direction and 39 inches (1000 millimetres) in the Y direction. Thanks to the unit’s 48-volt power supply, it can easily and dynamically handle loads of up to 8.8 pounds (four kilograms).

Additional details

A single adapter plate fits all EXCM pneumatic and electric front ends, which gives the machine builder greater flexibility and a better fit for many applications. These units are available with multipole and compressed air connection for electric and pneumatic pick-and-place units that also come pre-installed.

All EXCM gantries can be installed directly on a worktable without an external control cabinet. Their parallel kinematic drive concept ensures low moving masses. A perfectly matched controller package consisting of Festo motors and a controller is available for each one. The gantries are delivered with the actuators already connected, and the drives and controller package pre-parameterized for fast and easy installation and commissioning.
