The average spring isn’t very big or expensive, but it is one of the most critical elements of any mechanical assembly, and It has to be designed and built to high standards.

Before settling on an industrial spring or supplier, ask yourself the following questions:

Can I get what I need in one place?

It pays to simplify your supply chain by reducing, wherever possible, the number of vendors you deal with. Before you decide on a supplier, ask them about the needs they can meet beyond the services you normally associate with a springs supplier.

Does the potential supplier offer design assistance?

Maybe you need a spring but are not quite sure how the part should be designed. Or perhaps you have a design and are looking for an alternative that offers better performance, reduced cost — or both.

For example, a customer approached Springs and Things, a supplier of industrial springs, specialty springs, custom-made springs and parts with spring-like qualities, with a request to manufacture two springs. After looking at the designs and how the springs would be used, the company recommended an alternative that involved the manufacture of just one spring.

“Sure, in the short term, that meant a smaller order, but we learned long ago that the most important business is repeat business, and you have to deliver exceptional value and service to earn that loyalty,” the company says.

What material should I use?

Could you reduce costs and get increased functionality by switching from plastic or nylon to wire that is specially shaped or formed to meet your needs?

Does the company perform load testing of compression, extension and torsion springs?

At Springs and Things, performance is confirmed with load testing or, when necessary, more demanding testing in laboratory settings. The company uses the results of load tests to redesign parts that are close to what a customer needs, but require a slight adjustment in strength.

Mississauga, Ont.-based Springs and Things supplies wire springs, compression springs, extension springs, torsion springs, spiral torsion springs, wire forms, flat springs, assemblies, and coiled and special springs. Contact the company for details on how it can meet your industrial spring needs.
