Twenty per cent energy savings

One of the top users of electricity in its geographical region, Amhil North America specializes in lids and containers for food products. With rising electricity costs and consumers demanding that corporations be environmentally responsible, Amhil was looking for a more efficient energy storage solution.

Amhil had already had an existing working relationship with Enel X as a demand-response customer since 2010. So it turned to Enel X for the answer. The recommendation was the installation and operation of a 2.34-megawatt, 4.7-megawatt-hour, lithium-ion, behind-the-meter energy-storage system. By adding this new solution, Amhil not only increased its earnings through the province’s demand-response program; it also added considerable financial savings from managing peak charges.

Among the key results and benefits that Amhil saw from this new energy storage solution:

• Automatic battery charging and deployment for optimized energy use during peak hours;
• Higher level of participation in Ontario’s demand-response program;
• Contribution to local grid reliability; and
• An expected savings of 20 per cent in energy savings over the 11-year contract.

“For years, we have taken a proactive approach to managing and optimizing our energy usage, particularly during peak periods,” explained Mark Johnston, Amhil’s vice president of manufacturing. “With the new energy-storage facility, we will benefit from significant cost savings [and] additional demand-response revenues, all while reducing our overall energy dependence.”
