BMH performs a calibration in the lab using Memobase Plus by Endress+Hauser.

Canadian businesses benefit from test and measurement instrumentation developed by Endress+Hauser Canada Ltd. But this corporation has been logging customer success stories around the world for many years. A prime example is its work with German company Beiersdorf Manufacturing Hamburg GmbH (BMH). With the innovative, digital Memosens technology that comes with Endress+Hauser’s solutions, BMH achieves maximum calibration and availability for its pH sensors.

Continuous production of many products

At its Billbrook facility, BMH operates three shifts around the clock for five days a week. Continuous production is possible due to the broad product selection, so high availability of systems and equipment is important. The plant conducts an annual shutdown for several weeks for maintenance and calibration, during which workers remove, test, and calibrate permanently installed measurement instruments in the system.

The company employs a special procedure to deal with pH measuring points used in production and wastewater treatment. But interactions with the process medium result in contamination of pH sensors, so staff need to inspect and replace measuring equipment on a regular basis, and this increases expenses. For a while, BMH was replacing these sensors after certain time periods, and the analog technology made it impossible to maintain a supply of pre-calibrated sensors for fast switches.

BMH production engineer Sven Ritz needed a solution for laboratory-based pH calibration. “Our top priority is to guarantee continuous production,” he says. So Ritz settled on Endress+Hauser’s brand of Memobase Plus solutions.

After changing to Endress+Hauser’s Memosens technology, the plant implemented several additional improvements. BMH can now calibrate digital pH sensors, like the Orbisint CPS11D, in the lab, storing the calibration data in the sensor head. These sensors can be used with any digital Memosens cable and transmitter in the field.

Top advantages of this Endress+Hauser technology: calibration is qualitatively the same in the lab and the field; constant production, due to the pre-calibrated sensors; and longer operational lifespans for sensors, which are now discarded based on evidence, not time used.

“We can now maintain a supply of pre-calibrated pH sensors,” says Ritz. “This reduces the calibration workload.”
