ISFET sensors

Endress+Hauser’s new generation of ISFET sensors, made from unbreakable PEEK, raises the performance bar in glass-free pH measurement. All three models are built to perform reliably through at least 25 Clean in Place (CIP) cycles.

The latest breakthrough available from Endress+Hauser Canada Ltd. is a new line of ion-sensitive field-effect transistor sensors, or ISFET sensors. These products are constructed with unbreakable polyetheretherketone, or PEEK, while providing consistent accuracy, safety, and more than six times more clean-in-place (CIP) stability than the manufacturer’s previous generation of ISFET sensors had. Built for reliable performance through a minimum of 25 CIP cycles, they break new ground in glass-free pH measurement.

Meeting strict hygienic demands

Available in three new models – the Memosens CPS47D, CPS77D, and CPS97D – these ISFET sensors are recommended for any applications in which challenging process conditions or breakage risks make glass pH sensors unsuitable. Workers in food processing and life sciences prefer not to use glass sensors because they can contaminate entire production batches if the glass breaks. But PEEK is a high-performance plastic that offers extremely high chemical and temperature resistance, significantly reducing the chances of breakage. These new sensors also have three different reference systems, so there is a glass-free sensor available for every individual application.

Endress+Hauser has equipped the Memosens CPS47D and CPS77D sensors to meet all of the stringent demands of hygienic applications. They are both TSE- and BSE-free, while delivering stable, reproducible measured values, even following sterilization and autoclaving up to temperatures as high as 135 degrees Celsius. These ISFET sensors also come with all of the standard hygiene approvals for the food-processing and life-sciences industries; these include USP, EHEDG, and 3A. The CPS77D also has hygienic design and materials that enable high bacterial tightness, which keeps food production free from any contamination.

The advantage of the Memosens CPS97D is its quick response time and, due to the rugged PEEK construction, its chemical stability – even at low temperatures. This is important, as chemical processes at low temperatures poses specific challenges for pH measurement, as does a high amount of organic solvents or solids. Another benefit is an open diaphragm, which prevents clogging even with high solids concentrations, and the firm gel used in the reference has high chemical resistance.
