Iplom SpA in Italy benefited from an Endress+Hauser measurement solution.

Over decades, Endress+Hauser has logged many customer success stories around the world and continues to do so through its Canadian affiliate in Burlington, Ont. The company is still proud of the time it helped an oil-refining company near Genoa, Italy optimize its refining process, enhance efficiency, boost process safety, and extend catalyst life – all of this with the iTHERM MultiSens Flex TMS02 multipoint thermometer.

A tailor-made measurement solution

Iplom SpA wanted to increase safety in a hydro-desulfurization (HDS) application through precise three-dimensional temperature profiling. Due to the price volatility of the product, the company sought to increase process efficiency and quality to stay competitive in the oil and gas industry. Other goals included the following: optimize process monitoring and control; minimize uneven temperature distribution; gain meaningful data for future improvement; and increase catalyst life. A robust and long-lasting solution was required because of the harsh process conditions of the HDS reactor and the presence of corrosive chemicals.

It was a challenging task, so Iplom turned to Endress+Hauser for the answer.

Endress+Hauser recommended a tailor-made temperature profile measurement solution consisting of the iTHERM MultiSens Flex TMS02 and the company’s expert guidance from configuration to installation. The MultiSens Flex multipoint thermometer was a robust, single-nozzle, multi-sensor instrument that could monitor the temperature profile of the catalyst bed in a 3D layout, and its on-board diagnostic chamber added a crucial process containment layer.

The Iplom team selected a Flex TMS02 with a configuration carrying 20 measuring points, 12 of which were innovative TS901 ProfileSens inserts. The built-in diagnostic chamber offered essential information for monitoring the condition of the multipoint assembly while detecting and containing potential process leaks. Iplom installed the multipoint thermometer on the Level 4 catalyst bed of the diesel oil reactor to monitor temperature at two heights.

The reactor need to be fully operational as soon as possible, so Endress+Hauser technicians also provided project management, layout engineering, instrument engineering, and other services to complete the project on time and within budget.

Iplom was very pleased with the solution – another triumph in Endress+Hauser’s track record.
